New Driver Training
Dragon Taxis is an accredited Edexcel training centre, the courses delivered are:
- Cardiff County Council Taxi Knowledge Training.
- BTEC level 2 The Introduction to the Role of The Professional Taxi & Private Hire Driver.
To become a Cardiff taxi driver you have to:
- pass both courses
- pass a medical
- be over 21 years of age
- and have held your driving licence for at least one year.
Once qualified you will be a self employed driver, sub contracting to Dragon Taxis.

Things you might like to know
Do I need my own vehicle?
No. Dragon Taxis will rent you a licensed vehicle ready to work, which you can keep to use in your own time for as long as you remain with the company. Alternatively you can purchase your own vehicle, Dragon Taxis will give you advice and support on what to buy.
Do I need experience?
You do not necessarily need experience of driving a private hire vehicle. If you are enthusiastic, reliable, have a good knowledge of Cardiff and speak good English, you are welcome to apply to become a Dragon Taxis driver. You will need a Public Carriage Office licence in order to work for Dragon Taxis.
What training will I receive?
Dragon Taxis are an accredited Edexcel training centre and have a strong driver training team who will ensure that you have all the knowledge and training you require. All drivers have the opportunity to pass a Btec Level 2 award in The Role of a Professional Taxi & Private Hire Driver.
How much will I earn?
The answer to this question is completely in your own hands. Naturally, the more journeys you complete, the more money you will receive. On average drivers work approximately 45 hours per week and, depending on when they work, the average take home pay after expenses would normally be £350 to £400
Will I be paid cash for every journey?
There are two types of booking at Dragon Taxis. Our priority service is account based bookings. For these journeys, you will not receive cash from the client, but you will be paid weekly, by cheque or directly into your bank account.
Secondly, there are cash bookings. For these journeys, the passenger will pay you directly, in cash, when you have completed the journey.
Will I be self-employed?
Yes. All Dragon Taxi drivers are self-employed and sub contract to Dragon Taxis.
Do I pay for my own fuel?
Yes. It is the driver's responsibility to ensure that his/her vehicle always contains enough fuel to complete each journey.
What Equipment will I have in my Car ?
All our vehicles have the latest in-car data systems with a map. We also have facilities like ring-back and text back to let customers know when you arrive.
What do I need to become a driver?
Before starting work with Dragon Taxis, you will need to provide us with, a full clean driving licence and 2 forms of identification clearly showing your current address.
When can I start?
If you are already a licensed Cardiff County Council driver then normally straight away,
If you require the full training then it could be up to three months by the time all the training is finished.
